Social Sustainability

Social sustainability is a critical aspect of a modern-day society that focuses on enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities while promoting equitable distribution of resources. Despite its importance, social sustainability is often overlooked when discussing sustainability in general. Without it, innovative sustainable solutions can't be as effective in the long term. Social sustainability is not only critical for ensuring that communities and individuals have access to the resources, services, and opportunities they need to thrive, it also interconnects with the two other pillars of sustainability by helping protect the environment and promoting economic growth.

Despite there being enough food to feed everyone, over 690 million people worldwide suffer from hunger, and more than 700 million people live in extreme poverty. Additionally, 258 million children and youth around the world are not receiving the education they need and deserve. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of social sustainability, as marginalized communities were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic's health and economic impacts.

On this page, you will find articles where we explore the key components of social sustainability. This can include community engagement and development, ethical and sustainable food systems and creating equitable and fair societies for all regardless of social status, race, gender or ethnicity. We'll provide you with the resources you need to help you understand the importance of social sustainability and how it can be achieved.
